The United States Open Championship is here in North Carolina this week, marking the event’s fourth visit to the state, in each case to the world-renowned #2 course at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst.

Pinehurst #2 previously hosted the US Open, which started in 1895, in 1999, 2005 and 2014, when the winners were Payne Stewart (United States), Michael Campbell (New Zealand) and Martin Kaymer (Germany), respectively.

Joining Kaymer in this year’s 156-player field are 13 additional US Open champions of the past: Tiger Woods (2000, 2002, 2008), Brooks Koepka (2017, 2018), Wyndham Clark (2023), Bryson DeChambeau (2020), Matt Fitzpatrick (2022), Lucas Glover (2009), Dustin Johnson (2016), Rory McIlroy (2011), Jon Rahm (2021), Justin Rose (2013), North Carolina native and former Wake Forest star Webb Simpson (2012; pictured above), Jordan Spieth (2015) and Gary Woodland (2019).

Because the US Open traditionally has been held in mid-June, just before the official start of summer, United States Golf Association (USGA) officials typically have selected elite courses in the Northeast, Midwest and northern California for more frequent visits.

The states that have hosted the most US Opens are New York (20), Pennsylvania (17), California (15), Illinois (13) and Massachusetts (10).

The most recent weather forecasts for Pinehurst during the days scheduled for competitive play (Thursday-Sunday) this week call for mostly sunny conditions and daily high temperatures in the low to mid-90s.

NBCUniversal will provide more than 45 hours of live coverage of this week’s US Open on its over-the-air television (NBC), cable (Golf Channel, USA Network) and streaming (Peacock) subsidiaries.

Led by Emmy Award-winning producer Tommy Roy, NBCUniversal’s programming will utilize a deep roster of broadcasters, led by anchor Dan Hicks and analyst Brandel Chamblee.

Former NC State basketball player Terry Gannon, a member of the Wolfpack’s 1983 national championship team, also will serve in a play-by-play role, as will Mike Tirico, Steve Sands, Rich Lerner and Tom Abbott.

Joining Chamblee as analysts will be Notah Begay III, Curt Byrum, Brad Faxon, Smylie Kaufman, Gary Koch and Arron Oberholser.

Begay, Byrum, Kaufman and Oberholser also will serve as on-course reporters, along with long-time caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay, Paige Mackenzie, Roger Maltbie and John Wood.

Kira Dixon and Damon Hack will handle off-course interviews.
