More than 60 Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball players either made themselves available during the first week of the NCAA transfer portal, which opened March 24, or announced their intention to do so soon.
Boston College, Cal, Clemson, Florida State (coaching change), Georgia Tech, Miami (coaching change), NC State (coaching change), Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia (coaching change), Virginia Tech and Wake Forest each had three or more players enter the 2025 portal during its first seven days, and 16 of the ACC’s 18 programs had at least one player make himself available for conversations with other schools.
Just two days after the official hiring of new head coach Ryan Odom, Virginia saw five of its regular starters — and nine players overall — enter the portal, including junior guard Isaac McKneely, an honorable mention All-ACC selection this season.
Last spring, more than 100 ACC players entered the portal, and only a handful ultimately opted to stay with their 2023-24 team.
Overall, during the 2024 cycle, more than 2,000 Division One men’s basketball players entered the transfer portal. That was the highest total in NCAA history.
The rising popularity of the portal reflects multiple factors, including: 1-thanks to ongoing lawsuits, the NCAA backed off its rule requiring multi-time transfers to sit out a year of competition at their new school; and 2-the growth and availability of Name-Image-Likeness money at many prominent programs offers star players at other schools another incentive to explore their options.
A player’s official entry into the transfer portal enables other schools to contact him without fear of violating NCAA tampering rules. A player who enters the portal can withdraw his name at any time and stay at his current school, although that happens with only a very small percentage of entries.
This year’s portal window for men’s basketball is open for just 30 days (March 24-April 22). That number is down from 45 days in 2024 and 60 days in 2023, after votes by the NCAA’s Division I Council.
Under the NCAA’s modern transfer rules, a player doesn’t need to select his new school by April 22, but if he didn’t enter the portal during the 30-day window that ends April 22, he may not be immediately eligible at his new school.
