In 2024, North Carolina hosted the U.S. Open in Pinehurst. In 2025, the golf world revisited the Bold North State for the PGA Championship in Charlotte.

While there are no major golf championships on the in-state calendar this year, North Carolina will host three PGA Tour events in 2026, beginning with this week’s Truist Championship at Quail Hollow Club, which welcomes another fantastic field to the Queen City.

Seventeen of the top 20 players in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) are scheduled to compete this week at Quail Hollow, led by Rory McIlroy (#2), Cameron Young (#3), Matt Fitzpatrick (#4), Justin Rose (#5), Tommy Fleetwood (#7), JJ Spaun (#9) and Xander Schauffele (#10).

McIlroy, a six-time major winner who captured his second consecutive Masters victory last month, previously has taken the Quail Hollow title four times — in 2010, 2015, 2021 and 2024. The only other multi-time winner of the event, Max Homa (2019 and 2022), also is in this week’s field.

Later this year, the Wyndham Championship will return to Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro (Aug. 6-9). Meanwhile, in an exciting new twist, the Biltmore Championship (Sept. 17-20) will give Asheville its first PGA Tour event since 1942.

Among the top 50 golfers in the latest OWGR, 39 plan to compete this week at Quail Hollow.

Ben Griffin (#14), Akshay Bhatia (#24) and Ryan Gerard (#32) have deep and various ties (see details below) to North Carolina. So do JT Poston, Tom Hoge and Webb Simpson, who also are scheduled to compete in this week’s field.

The Truist Championship has a $20 million purse this year, with $3.6 million going to the winner.
