The 2024 college football season ramps up Thursday through Monday with a robust Week One schedule, including highly anticipated matchups involving Atlantic Coast Conference teams and a variety of intriguing new quarterbacks leading a large majority of North Carolina-based squads.
The national headlines of ACC/NC interest are led by #14 Clemson taking on #1 Georgia on Saturday in Atlanta (noon, ABC). Between them, Tigers coach Dabo Swinney (2016, 2018) and Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart (2021, 2022) have won four of the last eight Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) national championships.
Elsewhere in the Top 25, #10 Florida State hosts Boston College on Monday (7:30, ESPN), #19 Miami visits Florida on Saturday (3:30 pm, ABC), and #24 NC State hosts Western Carolina on Thursday (7 pm, ACC Network). The Seminoles, the ACC media’s choice to repeat as conference champion, are 0-1 after falling 24-21 to Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland, in a Week Zero matchup.
Meanwhile, six of North Carolina’s seven FBS programs are expected to introduce new starting quarterbacks, each of them from the transfer portal: Hank Bachmeier (Boise State/Louisiana Tech) at Wake Forest, Max Brown (Florida) at Charlotte, Jake Garcia (Miami/Missouri) at East Carolina, Max Johnson (LSU/Texas A&M) at North Carolina, Grayson McCall (Coastal Carolina) at NC State and Maalik Murphy (Texas) at Duke.
All seven of the state’s Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams also are in action this week, with four visiting FBS opponents in their season opener.
Western Carolina, #19 in the preseason FCS poll, travels to NC State on Thursday (7 pm, ACC Network). North Carolina A&T visits Wake Forest on Thursday (7 pm, ACC Extra), Elon heads to Duke on Friday (7 pm, ACC Network) and Campbell visits Liberty on Saturday (6 pm, ESPN+).
On Sunday afternoon, NC Central — the 2022 HBCU national champion under coach Trei Oliver, now in his sixth year leading the Eagles — revisits the national television spotlight with a trip to Alabama State (3 pm, ESPN).
Eight of the state’s 14 Division Two programs are in action this week, although preseason #9 Lenoir-Rhyne (under new coach Doug Socha) won’t begin its season until Sept. 7. After fourth-year coach Mike Jacobs led the Bears to the national semifinals last season, he left Hickory to take the top job at Mercer, an FCS program that competes in the Southern Conference.
On Sunday night, Johnson C Smith gets a rare nationally televised game when the Golden Bulls visit Tuskegee (7 pm, ESPNU). JCSU, which was picked to finish fourth in the 11-team Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) this season, is led by senior linebacker Benari Black.
The overwhelming majority of Division Three teams, including all five in North Carolina, won’t start their seasons until Week Two at the earliest.
