The 2024 college football season continues Saturday with an intriguing Week Three schedule, including multiple high-profile matchups involving Atlantic Coast Conference and/or North Carolina-based teams.
Appalachian State and East Carolina, who have played each other only twice as Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) members, will battle in Greenville late Saturday afternoon. The programs’ two previous FBS-level meetings, both won by the Mountaineers, took place in Charlotte (2021) and Boone (2023).
The Mountaineers, who are a two-point favorite over the Pirates, are trying to rebound from a 66-20 shellacking at Clemson last week. ECU, coming off a disastrous 2-10 campaign a year ago, is seeking a 3-0 start this season.
In other games being played this week on North Carolina soil, Wake Forest is hosting #5 Ole Miss, Duke (vs. UConn) and North Carolina (vs. NC Central) are home favorites as they aim for 3-0 starts, and NC State (vs. Louisiana Tech) is hoping to bounce back from its 51-10 curb-stomping at the hands of Tennessee.
Meanwhile, there are only two Top 25-vs.-Top 25 matchups nationally this week, and an ACC team is involved in one of them, with a former NC State and former App State coach leading the opposing team.
When #24 Boston College visits #6 Missouri on Saturday afternoon, it will be first-year coach Bill O’Brien leading the 2-0 Eagles against the 2-0 Tigers of coach Eli Drinkwitz, who was the Wolfpack’s offensive coordinator from 2016 through 2018 and the Mountaineers’ head coach during their 12-1 campaign in 2019.
In other ACC action, California, #10 Miami, Pitt and Virginia all are seeking a 3-0 start while playing on their home field. The Bears and Hurricanes are big favorites against San Diego State and Ball State, respectively, while the Panthers and Cavaliers are slight underdogs against West Virginia and Maryland, respectively.
In another intriguing matchup, 0-2 Florida State will host 2-0 Memphis. The Seminoles were picked to win the ACC but already have lost two conference games, while the Tigers are considered among the best teams in the American Athletic Conference this season.
