April represented the bulk of the NCAA’s annual transfer window for men’s basketball, and Division One programs across North Carolina continued to build or supplement their 2024-25 rosters with players from other major college teams well into May.

Appalachian State, Charlotte, East Carolina, High Point and UNC Wilmington were among the in-state teams that signed multiple players with proven production at the junior college or major college level.

Gardner-Webb and Western Carolina went through coaching changes this spring. Catamounts head coach Justin Gray left Cullowhee to take the Coastal Carolina job. Long-time Bulldogs coach Tim Craft then departed Boiling Springs to become Gray’s successor at WCU. Gardner-Webb then elevated assistant Jeremy Luther to head coach.

Under new rules adopted last October, the transfer portal was open for 45 days this time (March 18-May 1), down from last year’s 60 days. A player must have notified his school by the May 1 deadline to enter the portal properly, which enables him to have immediate eligibility at his new school.

The May 1 deadline applies to a player’s entry into the transfer portal, not the timing of his ultimate decision. Thus, although some college teams already had 13 scholarship players (the maximum allowed by NCAA rules) on their projected 2024-25 roster by mid-May, others are continuing to recruit transfers and/or high school players for their final openings.

Reflecting the overwhelming impact of the transfer portal and rule changes that enable immediate eligibility for almost all transfers, 13 of the 15 North Carolina-based programs listed below have signed more transfers than they did high school or international prospects, in most cases by a significant margin.

2024 NC Basketball Signees
Total—School (Transfers/HS or Int. Signees)

12—Appalachian State (6/6)
8—East Carolina (6/2)
8—UNC Asheville (6/2)
7—Queens (5/2)
7—UNC Wilmington (6/1)
6—Charlotte (6/0)
5—Campbell (5/0)
5—Elon (4/1)
5—Gardner-Webb (3/2)
5—High Point (4/1)
5—Western Carolina (3/2)
4—UNC Greensboro (3/1)
3—Davidson (1/2)
3—N.C. Central (3/0)
2—North Carolina A&T (2/0)

High school seniors who missed the early signing period last November had the option to sign their binding national letter of intent during the Spring 2024 signing period (April 17-May 15.). After that May 15 deadline, prospects can sign only an athletics aid agreement, which is non-binding and not part of the National Letter of Intent (NLI) program.
