Scottie Scheffler secured his third major championship and a record-setting payday Sunday by winning the 2025 PGA Championship in convincing fashion at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

The event marked the sixth major championship held in North Carolina in the past 27 years, with four U.S. Opens being contested at Pinehurst #2 and two PGA Championships being hosted at Quail Hollow Club.

Scheffler’s victory represented the third consecutive North Carolina-based major captured by one of the world’s top golfers.

Justin Thomas (#6 in the latest Official World Golf Rankings) won the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, Bryson DeChambeau (one of the top performers on the LIV Golf tour) took the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst #2, and Scheffler (#1 in the OWGR) is now widely considered the sport’s gold standard.

Meanwhile, two in-state favorites — former UNC golfers Ryan Gerard (25 years old) and Ben Griffin (29) — also played their way into the tournament’s top 10, posting the best major finishes of their young careers.

By tying for eighth place with proven veterans such as Keegan Bradley, Matt Fitzpatrick and Jon Rahm, among others, Gerard and Griffin each earned $454,781.11.

Scheffler finished with a score of 11-under-par 273, five strokes ahead of DeChambeau, Harris English and Davis Riley, who tied for second place.

Entering the final round with a three-shot lead, Scheffler faced a challenging front nine, including a two-over-par stretch. However, he regained composure on the back nine, highlighted by a key birdie at the par-five 10th hole.

Meanwhile, Rahm, who had been a close contender, struggled on the demanding “Green Mile” and ultimately fell behind.

This week’s victory not only added the prestigious Wanamaker Trophy to Scheffler’s collection but also came with a record-breaking $3.42 million share of the $19 million purse, the largest in tournament history.

At 28 years old, Scheffler joined golf icons Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players since World War Two to win at least 15 PGA Tour titles and three major championships before their 29th birthday.

The 2025 PGA Championship featured a field of 156 players, with 74 making the cut. Notable players who missed the cut included Thomas, Jordan Spieth and two-time champion Phil Mickelson.
