Lose More Than Half Their Rosters To Portal

During the NCAA’s 2025 transfer portal window for men’s basketball, 89 Atlantic Coast Conference players made themselves available, and every one of them eventually found a new home somewhere on the Division One level.
The 2026 portal window had a later starting date — April 7, rather than last year’s March 24 — and it was significantly shorter, too, just 15 days (April 7-21) rather than last year’s 30 days (March 24-April 22), but that didn’t prevent it from being extremely busy.
Ultimately, 106 ACC players with NCAA eligibility remaining entered the portal this time. By early August, 100 of them had selected a new school (see below), four more had withdrawn from the portal and remained with their 2025-26 school, and one player had opted to turn pro and play overseas.
In addition, dozens of players entered the portal despite exhausting all four years of college eligibility, and lawsuits impacting their possible 2026-27 eligibility lingered into late August.
In short, the speed-dating aspect of recruiting major college transfers is now more fast-paced than ever, and starting in March, ACC players began announcing their intention to enter the portal, although for most (those whose coach left are treated differently) that decision couldn’t be processed and become official until April 7.

The rising popularity of the portal reflects multiple factors, including: 1-thanks to a wide variety of lawsuits, the NCAA has gradually made virtually all transfers immediately eligible at their new school; and 2-the growth and availability of Name-Image-Likeness money (began in 2021) and/or revenue-sharing money (began in 2025) at other programs offers players more incentive than ever to at least explore their options.
A player’s official entry into the transfer portal enables other schools to contact him without fear of violating NCAA tampering rules. A player who enters the portal can withdraw his name at any time and stay at his current school, although that happens with only a very small percentage of entries.
Meanwhile, the number of days in the NCAA’s portal window for men’s basketball continues to shrink. That number was 45 days in 2024 and 60 days in 2023, after previous votes by the NCAA’s Division I Council.
Under the NCAA’s new transfer rules, a player didn’t need to select his new school by April 21, but if he didn’t enter the portal during the 15-day window that ended April 21, he may not be immediately eligible at his new school. Starting in 2026, there also are severe penalties for coaches and schools that sign transfers who never properly entered the portal.

NOTE2: Eligibility year is for 2026-27 season. “Gr.” = graduate student.
NOTE3: Some 2025-26 college seniors — listed with an accompanying question mark (?) — entered the portal just in case an NCAA rules change and/or successful lawsuits enable a fifth year of eligibility in 2026-27.
