Exoduses From Duke, FSU, Louisville, SMU, Wake Forest;
Many Teams Lose Starters, Even All-Conference Performers

The newly redesigned NCAA transfer portal for men’s basketball opened March 18, with more than 300 players entering their names, including a significant number of starting-caliber players from programs around the Atlantic Coast Conference.

By the end of the first 10 days of this year’s transfer window, there were more than 1,000 names in the portal. By April 7, all 18 ACC programs had one or more player(s) in the portal. By April 24, more than 1,800 Division One men’s basketball players had entered the database nationally.

A player’s official entry into the transfer portal enables other schools to contact him without fear of violating NCAA tampering rules. A player who enters the portal can withdraw his name at any time and stay at his current school, although that happens with only a very small percentage of entries.

This year’s portal window for men’s basketball was open for 45 days (March 18-May 1), down from last year’s 60 days. The NCAA’s Division I Council adopted that rule change in a vote last October.

Under the NCAA’s modern transfer rules, a player doesn’t need to select his new school by May 1, but if he didn’t enter the portal during the 45-day window that ended May 1, he may not be immediately eligible at his new school.

More than 1,800 Division One men’s basketball players entered the portal last year, and the final number ultimately surged beyond 2,000 this year.

The popularity of the portal reflects multiple factors, including: 1-thanks to ongoing lawsuits, the NCAA recently backed off its rule requiring multi-time transfers to sit out a year of competition at their new school; and 2-the growth and availability of Name-Image-Likeness money at many prominent programs offers star players at other schools another incentive to explore their options.

Among ACC schools, Louisville (with 12 scholarship players departing) and incoming member Southern Methodist (nine) saw the highest attrition rates, which is not an unusual phenomenon during a coaching transition.

The Cardinals and Mustangs are now led by Pat Kelsey (hired after a successful three-year run with College of Charleston) and Andy Enfield (past 11 seasons at Southern Cal), respectively, after the postseason dismissals of those programs’ second-year head coaches, Kenny Payne and Rob Lanier.
