2024 ACC/NC College Basketball Portal (Outgoing):

ACC Exoduses At Cal, Duke, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest;
In-State Programs Lose Starters, All-Conference Performers

*** NOTE: There is an updated version of this article available HERE. ***

The newly redesigned NCAA transfer portal for men’s basketball opened March 18, with more than 300 players entering their names, including a significant number of starting-caliber players from programs around the Atlantic Coast Conference and across the state of North Carolina.

By the end of the first 10 days of this year’s transfer window, there were more than 1,000 names in the portal. By April 7, all 18 ACC programs had one or more player(s) enter his name in the portal, and more than 1,400 players had entered nationally.

A player’s official entry into the transfer portal enables other schools to contact him without fear of violating NCAA tampering rules. A player who enters the portal can withdraw his name at any time and stay at his current school, although that happens with only a very small percentage of entries.

This year’s portal window for men’s basketball is open for 45 days (March 18-May 1), down from last year’s 60 days. The NCAA’s Division I Council adopted that rule change in a vote last October.

More than 1,800 Division I men’s basketball players entered the portal last year, and a similarly large number is expected this year.

The popularity of the portal reflects multiple factors, including: 1-thanks to ongoing lawsuits, the NCAA recently backed off its rule requiring multi-time transfers to sit out a year of competition at their new school; and 2-the growth and availability of Name-Image-Likeness money at many prominent programs offers star players at other schools another incentive to explore their options.

In the ACC, Syracuse forward Maliq Brown, Louisville forward Brandon Huntley-Hatfield, Miami guard Bensley Joseph, Virginia Tech center Lynn Kidd, Wake Forest point guard Boopie Miller, Wake Forest forward Damari Monsanto, Virginia Tech guard Sean Pedulla (a third-team All-ACC selection this season) and Boston College guard Jaeden Zachery (a three-year starter) were among the most prominent players to enter the portal in the first few weeks of this year’s transfer window.

Kidd, who played his first collegiate season at Clemson, then the last three at Virginia Tech, quickly committed to Miami. Once he officially dons a uniform for the Hurricanes this fall, he will become one of the only athletes ever to represent three different ACC programs.

Pedulla, while announcing his transfer portal entry, specified that he was “strongly considering” staying with the Hokies for his senior season in 2024-25, but on April 24 he confirmed his commitment to Mississippi.

ACC newcomer Stanford, which recently fired head coach Jerod Haase (a former UNC assistant under Roy Williams), saw freshman forward Andrej Stojakovic and 7-foot-1, 250-pound star forward Maxime Raynaud (a second-team All-Pac-12 honoree this season) enter the portal. Stojaković, a former McDonald’s All-American, is a son of former NBA champion and three-time NBA All-Star Peja Stojaković.

Raynaud later decided to remain with the Cardinal under new coach Kyle Smith, formerly of Washington State.

Appalachian State (all-conference forward Tre’Von Spillers), Campbell (starting forward Laurynas Vaištaras), Charlotte (starting guard Jackson Threadgill and starting center Dishon Jackson), Davidson (two-year starter and team captain Grant Huffman), East Carolina (starting forward Brandon Johnson), Elon (starting guard Max Mackinnon), Queens (all-conference guards Deyton Albury and AJ McKee), UNC Asheville (starting forward Nick McMullen), UNC Greensboro (all-conference forward Mikeal Brown-Jones) and Western Carolina (starting guard DJ Campbell) are among the North Carolina-based programs that had key players enter the portal during its opening week.

Spillers soon committed to Wake Forest, Jackson to Iowa State, Huffman to Vanderbilt, Johnson to Miami, Albury to Utah State, McKee to Milwaukee, Brown-Jones to Mississippi, and Campbell to California.

Justin Gray, who led Western Carolina to its single-season wins record with a 22-10 mark this season, capping a remarkable three-year turnaround, recently left the Catamounts to take the Coastal Carolina head coaching job.

Long-time Gardner-Webb coach Tim Craft, who led the Runnin’ Bulldogs to the 2019 Big South Conference championship and their first (and still only) NCAA Tournament bid as a Division One program, then left Boiling Springs to become Gray’s successor at Western Carolina.
