2025 NC Basketball Transfer Portal Snapshot (Outgoing):

In-State Programs Lose Starters, Proven Stars
To ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, SEC Poachers

*** NOTE: If you’re looking for the ACC’s OUTGOING 2025 portal entries, including those of Duke, North Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest, please click HERE. If you’re looking for the INCOMING players heading into the 2025-26 season, including transfers and high school signees, please click HERE for the ACC or HERE for the other 15 men’s basketball programs in North Carolina. ***

More than 2,000 Division One men’s basketball players entered the transfer portal last year, the highest total in NCAA history, and many North Carolina-based programs lost top performers to teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten and/or Southeastern Conference.

During the 2025 portal-entry window, which opened March 24 and closed April 22, more than 100 players from in-state teams opted to explore their options, including more than a half-dozen all-conference performers.

Among the 2024-25 all-conference honorees who entered the portal were UNC Greensboro guard Donovan Atwell (SoCon), Davidson forward Reed Bailey (Atlantic-10), Campbell forward Colby Duggan (CAA), High Point guard Kezza Giffa (Big South), UNCG guard Kenyon Giles (SoCon), High Point forward Kimani Hamilton (Big South), NC Central guard Po’Boigh King (MEAC), UNC Asheville guard Jordan Marsh (Big South) and Elon guard TK Simpkins (CAA).

The rising popularity of the portal reflects multiple factors, including: 1-thanks to ongoing lawsuits, the NCAA backed off its rule requiring multi-time transfers to sit out a year of competition at their new school; and 2-the growth and availability of Name-Image-Likeness money at many prominent programs offers star players at other schools another incentive to explore their options.

In addition, during the ongoing 2025 cycle, many players who already have exhausted their college eligibility under existing rules entered the portal on the (seemingly slim) hope that either brand-new NCAA legislation or the results of ongoing lawsuits will enable all athletes to have five full seasons (even beyond the “free” 2020-21 COVID campaign) of competition.

A player’s official entry into the transfer portal enables other schools to contact him without fear of violating NCAA tampering rules. A player who enters the portal can withdraw his name at any time and stay at his current school, although that happens with only a very small percentage of entries.

This year’s portal window for men’s basketball was open for just 30 days (March 24-April 22). That number was down from 45 days in 2024 and 60 days in 2023, after votes by the NCAA’s Division I Council.

Under the NCAA’s modern transfer rules, a player didn’t need to select his new school by April 22, but if he didn’t enter the portal during the 30-day window that ended April 22, he may not be immediately eligible at his new school.
