While April represented the entirety of the NCAA’s 2026 transfer window for men’s basketball, most Division One programs across North Carolina have continued to supplement their 2026-27 rosters with players from other major college teams all summer long.
Last year, among the 15 in-state Division One programs beyond the Atlantic Coast Conference, High Point and UNC Wilmington signed the most impressive recruiting classes to supplement their already-strong foundations, which included a handful of important returnees.
Sure enough, under first-year head coach Flynn Clayman, the Panthers (31-5) went on to capture the Big South regular-season and tournament titles, then posted the first NCAA Tournament victory in their 27-year history as a Division One program. Meanwhile, under sixth-year head coach Takayo Siddle (pictured above), the Seahawks (27-7) won another Coastal Athletic Conference regular-season championship.
At Queens, fourth-year coach Grant Leonard tapped the transfer portal and the high school ranks last year to find key additions who helped the Royals to their first Atlantic Sun championship and — in their first year of eligibility! — their first NCAA Tournament trip as Division One members.
This year, it’s important to understand that the NCAA’s transfer window for men’s basketball changed yet again.
For most players (those whose head coach left have more flexibility), the transfer window was open for only 15 days (April 7-21), Last year, players had 30 days to enter the portal, down from 45 days in 2024 and 60 days in 2023. Reminder: A player can select his new school at any time during or after the transfer window; the dates listed govern only portal entry.
Reflecting the overwhelming impact of the transfer portal and rule changes that enable immediate eligibility for almost all transfers, each of the 15 North Carolina-based programs listed below has added more transfers than high school or international prospects in recent years, in most cases by a significant margin.
2026-27 NC Basketball Newcomers
Total—School (Transfers/HS or Int. Signees)
13—NC Central (12/1)
12—Campbell (9/3)
11—East Carolina (7/4), Gardner-Webb (7/4), High Point (7/4), UNC Greensboro (7/4)
10—App State (8/2), Charlotte (9/1), Elon (7/3), Queens (5/5), Western Carolina (6/4)
9—UNC Asheville (6/3), UNC Wilmington (6/3)
7—Davidson (4/3)
6—North Carolina A&T (4/2)
High school seniors who bypassed the early signing period in November had another opportunity to sign their institutional financial-aid agreements during the Spring 2026 signing period, which began April 15. NCAA schools stopped using the long-standing National Letter of Intent program in 2024, so the effective deadline for spring and summer college decisions now varies according to each university’s enrollment deadlines, policies and practices.
