2024 NC Basketball Transfer Portal Snapshot (Outgoing):

In-State Programs Lose Starters, Proven Stars,
Often To ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten Or SEC

More than 2,000 Division One men’s basketball players entered the transfer portal earlier this year, the highest total in NCAA history, and many North Carolina-based programs lost top performers to teams in the ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten and/or SEC.

The rising popularity of the portal reflects multiple factors, including: 1-thanks to ongoing lawsuits, the NCAA recently backed off its rule requiring multi-time transfers to sit out a year of competition at their new school; and 2-the growth and availability of Name-Image-Likeness money at many prominent programs offers star players at other schools another incentive to explore their options.

Among in-state schools, East Carolina (with nine scholarship players departing), Appalachian State (eight), Campbell (seven), Charlotte (seven), High Point (seven) and Western Carolina (seven) saw the highest attrition rates, with more than half their scholarship players departing for other programs.

2024 NC Basketball Transfers
(Outgoing; Scholarship Players Only)

9—East Carolina
8—Appalachian State
7—Campbell, Charlotte, High Point, Western Carolina
6—Davidson, Queens
5—Gardner-Webb
4—NC Central, UNC Asheville, UNC Wilmington
3—Elon, North Carolina A&T
2—UNC Greensboro

A player’s official entry into the transfer portal enables other schools to contact him without fear of violating NCAA tampering rules. A player who enters the portal can withdraw his name at any time and stay at his current school, although that happens with only a very small percentage of entries.

This year’s portal window for men’s basketball was open for 45 days (March 18-May 1), down from last year’s 60 days. The NCAA’s Division I Council adopted that rule change in a vote last October.

Under the NCAA’s modern transfer rules, a player doesn’t need to select his new school by May 1, but if he didn’t enter the portal during the 45-day window that ended May 1, he may not be immediately eligible at his new school.
